5 Steps to Avoid Premature Carpet Ageing

Clean Healthy Carpet

Clean Healthy Carpet

It is a sad fact that almost every day we are called to help another family deal with the heart ache of “carpet abuse”. Carpet that has been trampled on with dirty shoes, vacuumed with poor quality machines, and carpet left for years and years between cleaning. Tragically, many of these once fine specimens of carpet have had their lives shortened by many years. By following a few simple steps, these carpets could have been enjoyed for many more happy years. If you would like to avoid “premature ageing, follow these simple steps………………….

  1. Vacuum your carpet at least once a weekDry dirt will scratch your carpet fibres and cause permanent shadowy traffic patterns if left too long. Vacuum cleaners should have a motorized beater bar and be adjusted to the correct height for the pile.Make sure to empty the bag or dirt reservoir often.
  2. Don’t wear outdoor shoes inside. Dirt stuck to the soles of your shoes will stick to your carpet, dry out, and cause abrasive damage.
  3. Use carpet mats at all outside entrance doors.Leave abrasive and potentially damaging dirt on cheap mats, not on your beautiful carpets. Replace mats when they no longer clean up nicely.
  4. Wear slippers or socks. Oils and lotions from feet will cause your carpets to look dirty sooner. Sticky lotions will hold onto abrasive dirt that may cause damage.
  5. Deep clean your carpets every 12-18 months. If you leave your carpet cleaning until they look dirty, it may be too late. Our clients who have their carpets cleaned every 12-18 months (the Carpet and Rug Institute recommended frequency) have carpeting that always look fresh and new. Their carpets last many years longer too, saving them thousands of dollars in the long run.

Ask Phil & Nikki – How to Clean a Red Wine Spill from Valentine’s Swooner

Wine on Carpet

Hi Phil & Nikki.
Valentine’s Day is coming and it brought back memories of a spill I had last year. My spouse and I were cuddling on the sofa, when I accidentally knocked over a glass of red wine onto my carpet. It left a bad stain. What could I use to clean a red wine stain from my carpet?

Romantic Klutz, Burlington, Ontario

Dear Romantic Klutz,

Love can cause us all to swoon and get a little klutzy, but no worries, you can usually get those stains out of your if you act quickly.  Follow these directions to get rid of any evidence of your “kluziness”….

Step 1: Blot up as much of the spill as is possible. A wet/dry vacuum is useful if a large quantity of liquid was spilled. If spot has dried, saturate the tufts in the affected area with tap water (do not over wet). Allow to remain for about one minute and blot. If the spot is being removed using water, continue until the spot is completely removed. Blot dry and apply the paper towels and brick. If it is not completely removed go to the next step.

Step 2: Neutralize with a solution of 1/3 cup of white vinegar, 2/3 cup of water. Saturate spot, using a spray bottle and blot to remove excess moisture. After neutralizing, go to back to step 1.

Next time your sweetheart makes you swoon, make sure you don’t have a glass of wine in your hand.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Phil & Nikki.

Who’s Joining you in Bed Tonight

Your mattress likely has over 1,000,000 of these little critters bunking with you nightly.

Dustmites are a huge problem for those with allergies and asthma

Dust mites (not to be confused with much nastier bed bugs) are all over your home. These little bugs don’t bite or spread disease like bed bugs can, but over 2 million Canadians suffer from allergies caused by these tiny house companions.

Most people are not allergic to the bugs themselves, but rather to their poop. And they poop a lot. Each bug will produce 200 times it’s weight in poop over its lifetime. If you often wake up with watery eyes, a stuffy nose, skin rashes, or asthma symptoms, there is a good chance that you have dust mite allergies. So how can you get rid of them? You can never totally rid your home of dust mites, but you can reduce them and thereby reduce your symptoms. Here’s how:

Wash your bedding and pillows at once a week in hot water.

Vacuum daily if possible. Keep your home a little cooler (dust mites don’t reproduce well under 22 degrees C.)

Keep your humidity between 35 and 50 percent. Wash all stuffed toys in hot water.

Use mattress covers that can be easily removed and washed.

Replace pillows annually and use pillows made of Dacron or Orlon Have your mattresses, upholstered furniture, carpets and rugs cleaned annually (more often if you have asthma or severe allergies).

Spray your pillows, sofas, and mattresses with Young Living Thieves Spray regularly to control dust mites and kill germs naturally (available from Ecosuds).

Have a professional like the folks at Ecosuds professionally clean and sanitize your mattresses at least once a year if you suffer from allergies or asthma.
