As the winter drags on our bodies crave artery clogging comfort foods – fats, sugars and simple carbohydrates. Yep, all the good stuff.  Here are some healthier and easy to make, comfort foods

Your Best Friend or a Beast of (or Causing) Burden

dirty room dog

Did you know that your best friend can actually become your worst nightmare?

That’s right. He’s cuddly, cute and you love him, but sometimes he has a problem with “accidents” and pretty soon, you start to notice the… ummm… that strange odour.

Besides the obvious occasional accident from your pooch, his fur can also become a real problem. Every time he gives a good shake, his fur flies into the air, then attaches itself to your carpet and furniture. Some types of fur really embeds itself into fabrics and it can become quite a problem.

Then you have the problem of “I want in. I want out. I want in.” You know it… Your pooch is always on the move and the constant heading outside and then back inside brings in all kinds of dirt.

What can you do about all this?

Clean those “accidental” messes up quickly. Once you discover an accident, it’s important to grab a few paper towels and blot up the mess. A shop-vac also works well to suck out the urine that may have penetrated deeper into the carpet. You will want to get it before it sinks down into the padding of the carpet. A good enzyme based deodorizing solution (you can buy it from your favorite pet store) will help reduce or even eliminate the odour. If you find that the product doesn’t work for you, give us a call and we will help get rid of the awful smell.

A hairy situation can be tamed by brushing your dog often. Brushing that loose fur off your best buddy is far easier than trying to remove it from your furniture and rugs afterwards (and it’s great bonding time too).

While you may not have the time to wipe off your pooch’s muddy paws every time he wants back in, it is a good idea to place mats both inside and outside the door. When your buddy wants to come back inside, just let him bounce around a little while on the outside mat so some of that dirt stays out there where it belongs.

Follow these simple steps and your best friend is going to be a dream to live with, not a burden!

Soft and Hard. Warm and Cool. Rugs and Wood. Better Together

OrientalRugRoomsml

Over the last decade many homeowners have decided to remove carpet and replace it with hard surfaces like hardwood, laminate, ceramic, stone. They did so because they liked the look and felt it would be easier to maintain. What many found however, was that their new floor was not as easy to care for as first thought, and the feel underfoot was not as pleasant as when they had carpeting in the room. The solution many found was to add area rugs to their rooms.

Area Rugs can add a splash of colour, along with warmth, a soft feel, and a safer place for your kids and pets to play. But with so many types of area rugs available, how do you choose the rugs that are right for you?

Is your rug going to be placed in a high traffic area?

In high traffic areas like hallways and family rooms, choose rugs with busy patterns and colours that will easily hide dirt and soil. Select tightly woven or knotted rugs that will not show develop traffic patterns as quickly as thicker rugs would.

Is your rug in a room where you may spill food or drinks on it?

As I recommended in the higher traffic area, stay with a busier pattern. Make sure that a carpet protector is applied to avoid and permanent disasters. A tighter weave or knot helps as well, as spills tend to stay on the top of the carpet, rather than run deep into the fibres.

What about rugs in a bedroom?

Unless you like being woken up with a jolt on a cold winter morning, a plush, thick rug is the perfect choice beside your bed. Thick rugs provide excellent insulation from the cold. They also help to deaden sound, so you won’t disturb your partner when you leave for work early or arrive home late.

Synthetic or Wool?

Synthetic rugs will save you money in the short run, but wool is the better long term investment. It is rare for us to see a synthetic rug come into our shop that is more than ten years old, but we often have wool rugs brought to us that have been enjoyed for decades, some have been more than one hundred years old.  A well made wool rug will likely be passed down from generation to generation.

Special note of warning about long shag rugs

Long shag rugs (rugs with stands over one inch in length) have become very popular in recent years. They look and feel wonderful when you buy them, but you may want to consider these as “disposable” rugs. Because the strands on these rugs are so long, they are exceptionally difficult to maintain. Home vacuum cleaners are rarely powerful enough to suck the dirt from the base of the rugs. Tufts and fibres often pull out. Twisted strands often unravel, leaving a shadowy look that cannot be fixed. Some rugs actually have their colour applied as a coating (like a paint) that wears off over time or when cleaned.

Long shag rugs are the very difficult rug professionals to clean, so they will cost considerably more to have cleaned than other synthetic rugs, often more than wool or silk, so buy wisely.

Whether you are choosing your rug for its colour, design, warmth, longevity, or all of the above, you will find that the contrast of hard and soft surfaces will make your floors more beautiful and your home more enjoyable to live in.

5 Steps to Avoid Premature Carpet Ageing

Clean Healthy Carpet

Clean Healthy Carpet

It is a sad fact that almost every day we are called to help another family deal with the heart ache of “carpet abuse”. Carpet that has been trampled on with dirty shoes, vacuumed with poor quality machines, and carpet left for years and years between cleaning. Tragically, many of these once fine specimens of carpet have had their lives shortened by many years. By following a few simple steps, these carpets could have been enjoyed for many more happy years. If you would like to avoid “premature ageing, follow these simple steps………………….

  1. Vacuum your carpet at least once a weekDry dirt will scratch your carpet fibres and cause permanent shadowy traffic patterns if left too long. Vacuum cleaners should have a motorized beater bar and be adjusted to the correct height for the pile.Make sure to empty the bag or dirt reservoir often.
  2. Don’t wear outdoor shoes inside. Dirt stuck to the soles of your shoes will stick to your carpet, dry out, and cause abrasive damage.
  3. Use carpet mats at all outside entrance doors.Leave abrasive and potentially damaging dirt on cheap mats, not on your beautiful carpets. Replace mats when they no longer clean up nicely.
  4. Wear slippers or socks. Oils and lotions from feet will cause your carpets to look dirty sooner. Sticky lotions will hold onto abrasive dirt that may cause damage.
  5. Deep clean your carpets every 12-18 months. If you leave your carpet cleaning until they look dirty, it may be too late. Our clients who have their carpets cleaned every 12-18 months (the Carpet and Rug Institute recommended frequency) have carpeting that always look fresh and new. Their carpets last many years longer too, saving them thousands of dollars in the long run.

Divine Intervention Could Not Keep Pope from Slip & Fall Injury

Pope Benedict Broken Wrist

The recent retirement of Pope Benedict XVI brought to light the dangers all seniors face at home and abroad. Back in 2009 The Pope slipped and fell while on vacation in Northern Italy. Thank God he was not seriously injured, but he did suffer a broken wrist. For many seniors who slip and fall, the injuries are much more serious.

Did you know that half of all of those over 65 who fall and fracture a hip are unable to return home and carry on an independent life?

Ecosuds’ new SlipMedic service can quickly and  affordably remedy slippery-when-wet hard floor and bath surfaces, dramatically reducing the likelihood of a slip and fall accident. Contact us to learn more.
